KUALA LUMPUR: Malayan Banking Bhd (Maybank) said its Indonesian unit is cooperating with authorities after some of its personnel were asked to provide information as witnesses in connection with an ongoing matter involving certain corporate customers.

“Maybank Indonesia’s personnel have been requested to provide information as witnesses to assist the authorities, and the Bank is not the subject of any investigation.

“Maybank Indonesia is cooperating with the relevant authorities in accordance with applicable laws and regulations,” the banking group said in a statement on Wednesday.

The clarification follows a Bloomberg report that Indonesian authorities had questioned Maybank Indonesia personnel as part of an investigation into suspected export flows involving PT Salim Ivomas Pratama, one of Indonesia's largest palm oil producers.

According to the report, authorities are examining whether some exports were invoiced below market prices to conceal profits and reduce taxes.

It said Maybank Indonesia staff had provided documents and information to the Attorney General's Office as witnesses.

Bloomberg reported that neither Maybank nor PT Salim Ivomas Pratama had been accused of wrongdoing, and it remained unclear whether any misconduct had been established.

Maybank said its Indonesian unit was cooperating with the relevant authorities in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.

"As a regulated financial institution, Maybank remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of governance, compliance and integrity across all its operations," it said.

The group added that it remains committed to fulfilling its legal and regulatory obligations in all jurisdictions in which it operates.
