Megan Hilty Announces Leave of Absence From Broadway After Tony Awards Performance
Megan Hilty has done her final curtain call…for now.
The actress, who stars as Madeline Ashton in the Broadway revival of Death Becomes Her, announced she’s taking a temporary leave of absence due to a vocal condition.
“Madeline Ashton is by far the most challenging and rewarding role I have ever taken on,” Megan wrote on her June 11 Instagram post. “The lengths to which I have gone to make sure I can physically do the show is a job in itself. The regimen is too long for this post – but I do it joyfully because, as I mentioned before, I LOVE what I do.”
Though the 43-year-old has a soft spot for the musical, she knows her injury will worsen if she doesn’t take a break. In order to preserve her voice, she’s decided to step away from the character—which is portrayed by Meryl Streep in the 1992 film—“for 3-4 weeks.”
“It’s hard for me to admit I am human, particularly because performers are often asked to push through and pretend that we’re not,” the Smash singer continued. “I am so fortunate to work with the best producers, company, & stage managers, who don’t subscribe to that way of thinking and fully support me and my fellow cast mates when our bodies tell us it’s time for a break.”
And while her role will be briefly filled, Megan asked fans for their “patience and understanding” as the show works around her absence. She also wants viewers to extend that grace to other Broadway singers who take on the “Herculean task” of performing on stage every night.
“We are athletes, and just like a professional basketball player, we are going to get injured from time to time,” Megan explained. “I’ll be counting the seconds until I can meet you back at the Lunt-Fontanne.”
Megan’s announcement comes four days after her appearance at the 2025 Tony Awards, where she and the Death Becomes Her cast performed “For the Gaze.” She was also nominated for Best Actress in a Musical at the event, which ultimately went to Nicole Scherzinger’s role in Sunset Boulevard.
Despite not taking home a Tony in the category, she’s still over the moon about being recognized.
“This moment is everything,” she told the Broadway World of the nomination in May, visibly emotional. “Not because I’m chasing rewards or anything, but there’s something about being invited to this party that is a symbol of an acknowledgement of what you’ve contributed to the Broadway community.”
