Just a couple of months ago, Meghan Markle got some backlash when the first season of her Netflix series, With Love, Meghan, was released. While haters were quick to criticize every aspect of the show, even big Markle fans were scratching their heads when she revealed she now uses Sussex as her last name, not Markle.

“It’s so funny, too, that you keep saying Meghan Markle,” Markle, who was born Rachel Meghan Markle, told special guest Mindy Kaling. “You know I’m Sussex now.”“You have kids and you go, ‘No, I share my name with my children,’” she explained of the decision. “I didn’t know how meaningful that would be to me, but it just means so much to go, this is our family name, our little family name.”

Now, sources are revealing that Sussex wasn’t the only last name Markle and her husband Prince Harry considered.

According to a friend of Harry to the Daily Mail, he once talked to his uncle, Charles Spencer, who is also the 9th Earl Spencer, about taking his late mom Princess Diana‘s last name, Spencer.

“They had a very amicable conversation and Spencer advised him against taking such a step,” the source said, revealing that Charles said the legal challenges of changing them all to Spencer wouldn’t be worth it. At the time, the move would’ve also meant replacing Mountbatten-Windsor as the last name for his kids, Archie and Lilibet.

Instead, Harry and Markle, who are still the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, started using Sussex as their last name. And, in 2024, a source told The Times of London that Markle and Harry’s children had been known as Archie Sussex and Lilibet Sussex since King Charles III’s 2022 coronation.

While we’re sure Harry would’ve loved to honor his late mom with her last name, it seems Harry and Markle got their own last name to fit the bill instead.
