When Meghan Markle joined the royal family in 2018, she gave up having her own social media platform. And while that meant having an official one on behalf of her and her husband Prince Harry, longtime fans surely missed her lifestyle, cooking and personal content. Luckily, that’s exactly what Markle is doing with her recently launched Instagram presence.

“It doesn’t feel like a drag, it feels liberating,” Markle said of her new socials in a June 17 appearance on the Aspire with Emma Grede podcast.

She then explained that she has no interest in making her presence all fancy with light, cameras, and whatnot. “If part of it is to authentically share in real time the things that are happening that I think someone might be able to laugh with, or enjoy or be inspired by, then I want to do that in a way that feels like I can still have my hands on it and not be overproduced,” she said.

Both Markle and Grede then laughed about the video Markle recently postedfor her daughter Lilibet’s birthday. In the video, both Markle and Harry are dancing and twerking in Lilibet’s delivery room.

“But that’s you, right?” Grede said of the hilarious video. “That’s you in a way that we kind of haven’t seen before. That’s what I want to see from you: that happiness and that honesty.”

“But also by the way, that wasn’t yesterday,” Markle noted. “That was four years ago. So it’s also a really great reminder that with all the noise or whatever people do, there’s a whole life — a real, authentic, fun life that’s happening behind the scenes.”

“I’m just grateful that now, being back on social as well, I have a place where I can share it on my own terms,” Markle said with a smile on her face.

She then clarified that she doesn’t see her socials as another avenue to promote her business, As Ever. “For me, it was a great way to get my voice back,” Markle said. “It’s my space and my channel for joy.”
