NASA’s Apollo programme was conceived in 1961 following President John F Kennedy’s pledge to land a man on the Moon before the end of the decade. The ambitious goal came off the back of the Cold War and was supported by the Mercury and Gemini space programmes. Spurred to action by Soviet success in the Space Race, Project Apollo would ultimately secure US victory on the Moon.
