NASA’s Apollo programme was conceived in 1961 following President John F Kennedy’s pledge to land a man on the Moon before the end of the decade. The ambitious goal came off the back of the Cold War and was supported by the Mercury and Gemini space programmes. Spurred to action by Soviet success in the Space Race, Project Apollo would ultimately secure US victory on the Moon. But when did the first Apollo mission fly to the Moon and who had the privilege of landing on the lunar orb?
