A school's Christmas nativity has left a parent in stitches – as she found out what characters their children would play.

Nativities are often held in schools around the country and with many roles to fill it can be tricky to find a suitable part for everyone. One parent found this out in an email received by the school, and while the role of choice is not a leading part, it is certainly crucial to the story.

Taking to Twitter/X with a screenshot of the email received from the school, user Emma Szewczak revealed her son had been cast as a wise man, while her daughter was tipped to play a rather unique part.

She wrote: "Nativity season is upon us! My son has been cast as a wise man. My daughter, on the otherhand..." The mum then attached a screenshot of the email from her kids' school.

The email reads: "Good afternoon. We have started preparations for our nativity! We are all really looking forward to seeing it come together and know your child will be excited, too!

"Your child has been cast as a door. This role will be interactive. Their costumes can be purchased or created at home using things such as cardboard and string to create a sandwich board style door for them to pop over their head."

Fellow Twitter/X users found the casting hilarious and suggested a few modern additions to the classic role. "Make sure it has a ring camera," one user joked. Original poster Emma replied: "Omg I'm definitely doing this."

Another user suggested heading for an alternate route with the costume, suggesting their child should be dressed like "Jim Morrison," lead singer of The Doors. Another joked: "At least that’s an interactive role. I was a tree."

Other members of the public shared their horror Christmas costumes, with the hilarious casting ranging from camel behinds to wardrobe doors. One wrote: "Haha. My daughter was once part of the door in 'The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe', so I definitely sympathise with her..."

Another added: "My brother was the back end of a camel." A third user who loved the post revealed: "I am crying laughing. As someone who was once cast as the pea in Princess and the Pea… I feel your daughter :)."

Emma, an author at Chatto Books, added: "I do not know why 'a door' is so funny but I literally sobbed with laughter." She has since revealed her plans to create "the most elaborate door in history" for her daughter's school nativity.

One user wrote: "I would be up all night creating the most elaborate door from history. It's what my mum would have done. They don't stipulate what sort of door." And Emma replied: "This is EXACTLY what I'm going to do."
