Malaysian drivers up north have already had the privilege of an alternative toll payment option when passing through toll plazas.

JustGo Malaysia has been operating the open toll payment system at highways in the northern region and they are preparing to expand its AI-powered toll payment system to more locations.

The open toll payment system, which uses Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology, allows vehicles to pass through selected toll lanes without needing a physical RFID tag, card, or SmartTAG device.

Instead, the system reads a vehicle’s licence plate and charges the linked debit or credit card through the JustGo Malaysia app.

The “Lane Freedom” concept eliminates the need to navigate toll booths depending on the type of payment method a driver is using. This usually results in slow moving traffic at toll plazas which becomes worse during peak hours.

To put it in simple terms, when you’re using JustGo, you can enter the highway in a Smart Tag lane and exit in an RFID lane.

The company announced the upcoming expansion through its official Threads account on 7 July, after the system gained attention from road users looking for more convenient toll payment options.

Previously, JustGo which is operated by PLUS Malaysia Berhad did announce they were targeting a Peninsular-wide rollout by August at all PLUS operated highways.

Currently, many Malaysian drivers rely on debit cards, Touch ‘n Go cards, SmartTAG, or RFID for toll payments.

JustGo offers an alternative by removing the need to install a device or maintain a physical card balance, as payments are directly linked to a bank card.

Some users have welcomed the expansion plans, with calls for the system to be introduced at other busy routes, including the Penang Bridge and toll plazas in Johor.

JustGo Malaysia was officially launched on 12 February 2026 following a pilot phase by PLUS Malaysia Bhd covering nine toll plazas between Hutan Kampung and Sungai Dua in the northern region.

By 18 February 2026, the JustGo app had recorded around 200,000 downloads.

In June, the system added three more locations; Jitra, Lunas and Kubang Semang toll plazas.
