KULAI: Major events in the state involving large crowds may be postponed further if the coronavirus (Covid-19) situation here worsens. Johor education, health and human resources committee chairman Aminolhuda Hassan said the state government would assess the situation at the end of February and decide on the action to be taken. “For now, we have urged organisers to postpone major events involving large crowds to avoid the virus from spreading,” he said after launching a food bank programme at Kolej Yayasan Pelajaran Johor here. Aminolhuda added that the state government would seek advice and guidance from the relevant departments, especially the Health Ministry, before making any decision. “As for now, Johor has taken extra measures compared to other states in Malaysia due to its proximity to Singapore, where the outbreak has worsened. “Among measures taken include health screenings for all at our checkpoints, especially at the Causeway and Sultan Abu Bakar Complex at the Second Link,” he said. Aminolhuda said some major events had been postponed this month but some were allowed to go on. Events postponed include the Malaysian Games pre-launch called Semarak Juara Sukma and Pasir Gudang International Kite Festival. — By VENESA DEVI
