Nvidia is in early talks with South Korean AI chip designer Rebellions on a possible technical partnership, investment, or acquisition after Jensen Huang met Rebellions co-founder and chief executive Sunghyun Park at Nvidia’s Santa Clara headquarters.

The discussions are preliminary and may not lead to a deal.

Rebellions, a startup based in Bundang, South Korea, was founded in 2020 and designs neural processing units for data centers focused on AI inference, the computing work used to run AI services.

Its ATOM architecture is aimed at generative AI workloads and has been used to run inference with Red Hat’s AI software stack.

Rebellions also said it completed a merger with SAPEON Korea.

The company has raised roughly US$850 million from investors including SK Hynix, Samsung Ventures, and Arm Holdings.

It also secured a direct investment from the South Korean government. It was most recently valued at about US$2.3 billion.

A deal would fit Nvidia’s AI investment push, including its move to invest in AI inference startup Baseten.
