Our girls stun HK to book World Junior Team C'ships final berth against Egypt

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian girls’ squash team pulled off a stunning win to defeat Hong Kong and book their spot in the World Junior Team Championships final in Canada on Thursday (July 30).

Malaysia upset second seeds Hong Kong 2-0 at Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, to enter the final for the first time since 2023.

Doyce Lee claimed the first point after defeating Armona Cheung 10-12, 11-8, 12-10, 8-11, 21-19 before Whitney Isabelle Wilson delivered the winning point by beating Helen Tang 14-12, 11-6, 8-11, 11-7.

The team, composed of Doyce, Whitney, V. Haneesha and Harleein Tan, will take on defending champions and 12-time winners Egypt in the final.

Malaysia have never won the team title, but have finished as runners-up five times, most recently in 2023.

Meanwhile, the boys’ team of Altamis Aqhar Sallam Sufian, Ivan Chang Jia Yu, M. Nickhileswar, and Aqil Mirza Naim Khairil Fariz lost 0-2 to France in the quarter-finals.

Nickhileswar fell 6-11, 9-11, 3-11 to Amir Khaled-Jousselin, before Altamis went down fighting 6-11, 11-6, 6-11, 9-11 to Theo Baudry.
