THE Ukrainian community in Penang, together with friends and well-wishers, gathered on Aug 22 to mark the 34th Independence Day of Ukraine, ahead of the official date which falls on Aug 24.

The celebration honoured Ukraine’s declaration of independence on 24 August 1991, a historic moment when the nation set forth on its path as a free and sovereign state.

Speaking at the event, honorary consul of Ukraine in Penang, Datuk Seri Chuah Kim Seah, paid tribute to the resilience and courage of the Ukrainian people while thanking Malaysians for their continuous support.

“Ukraine’s Independence Day is not only a commemoration of history, but also a celebration of resilience, unity and the enduring spirit of the Ukrainian people,” Chuah said.

“Although we are far from Kyiv, our hearts remain closely tied to Ukraine.

“The support we receive from Malaysians, the diplomatic community, and friends across the globe strengthens the bridge of friendship between nations that share the values of freedom and democracy,” he added.

He also acknowledged the difficult circumstances Ukraine continues to face.

“This is a challenging period when daily attacks from the invader have become a common sight.

“But we remain hopeful for peace, prosperity, and a brighter future for Ukraine,” he said.

The event concluded with a call for closer ties and stronger cooperation.

“May Ukraine continue to thrive in its independence, and may the bonds of friendship between Ukraine, Malaysia and the community here in Penang grow ever stronger,” Chuah added.
