They've been serving pizzas for almost 65 years – but many people are only just learning why the Domino's logo has three dots.

Founders Tom and James Monaghan opened their first store, then known as DomiNick's, in Michigan, US, in 1960. But just one year later, Tom traded his used 1959 VW Beetle to buy his brother's share of the store and later renamed the business Domino's Pizza.

The fast food chain opened its first UK store in Luton, Bedfordshire, in 1985. The franchise now has more than 1,200 locations across the UK and Republic of Ireland, delivering over 106million handcrafted pizzas a year.

Despite it being a lot of people's favourite pizza choice, many still have no idea that it's three-dot logo has a special meaning. It prompted one Quora user to ask: "What is the meaning of a single dot and a double dot in the Domino's logo?"

It turns out the logo represents Tom's original plan to open three stores. However, this idea was dropped due to the fast growth of the franchise. Expanding on this, one social media user said: "The very first Domino's logo was created in the 1960's.

"The three dots on the logo symbolize the three original Domino's locations that were open at the time. As the company planned to work hard on franchises, they planned to add a dot each time that a new location opened. They decided to flip the logo on its side."

Another user added: "The current Domino's logo was created in early 2012. This logo kept the famous Domino's icon, but removed the word pizza from the slogan, only showing the company name Domino's.

"The three dots on the logo symbolise the three original Domino's locations that were open at the time. As the company planned to work hard on franchises, they planned to add a dot each time that a new location opened." When Domino's was in its early years, founder Tom would make deliveries while running the business himself.

Just 14 months after setting up a new store in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, he was sent out to a dormitory at Central Michigan University to fulfil an order. There, he met his future wife – a woman working on the reception desk.

He said: "After our second date, I gave Margie a heart-shaped pizza for Valentine's Day. It was a big hit with her friends in the dorm. On our third date, I looked into those big blue eyes and realised I was in love." The couple were married the following year and Margie went on to work for Domino's for decades.
