Policeman awaiting trial for wife's murder found dead in cell

ARAU: A policeman detained at the Perlis Correctional Centre in Guar Nangka, awaiting trial over the murder of his pregnant wife two years ago, was found dead in his cell yesterday.

The 28-year-old policeman was found unconscious by a prison warden at around 4.30pm.

Arau district police chief, Superintendent Ahmad Mohsin Md Rodi, said they received information about the incident at approximately 5.25pm and confirmed that the deceased was a serving policeman.

Lance Corporal Mohamad Nizarman Hassim, was charged with the murder of his pregnant wife, Safsufarnisya Salleh, who was then 26, at their home in Kampung Bendang Baru, Simpang Empat in Kangar on Mar 5, 2023.

Ahmad Mohsin said police found no evidence of foul play.

"The body has been taken to the Forensic Department of Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Star for a post-mortem examination," he said.

Police have classified the case as a sudden death report (SDR).

The deceased's body is expected to be returned to his hometown of Setiu, Terengganu, for burial after the post-mortem is completed.
