SUNGAI BULOH: A policeman on duty at Sungai Buloh Hospital was assaulted by a man when he tried to break up a fight at the emergency ward today.

The 2.10am fight was reported to the district police control centre through the MERS 999 system, prompting the despatch of two police mobile patrol vehicles to the scene.

District police chief Superintendent Mohd Hafiz Muhammad Nor said the policeman tried to break up the fight before the patrol cars arrived.

"Upon arriving, police found that a policeman had been assaulted by a man in his 40s who was involved in the fight with a few others against one woman."

He said the policeman sustained injuries to the face.

He said efforts to subdue the attacker were met with resistance.

"He resisted when officers tried to handcuff him and a struggle ensued.

"With the help of members of the public, the suspect was detained and taken to the Sungai Buloh police headquarters."

The man has been remanded for four days until Sept 9.

The case is being probed under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant in the discharge of his duties, Section 353 for using criminal force against a public servant and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955 for indecent behaviour in a public place.

"Any form of violence against civil servants is a serious matter and there will be no compromise," Hafiz said.
