Policeman injured after man goes on rampage with parang

KUANTAN: A policeman was injured after being attacked with a machete by a man believed to be mentally unstable at a house in Felda Bukit Kuantan yesterday.
Corporal Mohd Shafril Izzwan Ismail, 37, suffered injuries to his back, chin and fingers on his left hand.
Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the incident occurred around 5.30pm after three policemen from the Panching police station responded to a report of a man going on a rampage with a machete.
Upon arrival, they attempted to calm the man.

"However, he became aggressive and slashed the victim with the machete," Yahaya said in a statement.
A team from the Kuantan police headquarters' Criminal Investigation Division was later deployed and arrested the suspect.
Mohd Shafril Izzwan was taken to Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan (HTAA) for treatment.
Yahaya said police also seized a machete and two other sharp weapons.
Initial checks showed the 37-year-old suspect had no prior criminal record and was unemployed.
He has been referred to HTAA's psychiatric ward for mental health evaluation.
The case is being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code for causing injury with a weapon.
