At the opening of Computex Taipei, Taiwan President William Lai said the self-ruled island is indispensable to global AI development as his government seeks more tech investment and addresses industry concerns over electricity supply.
Computex runs through June 5 and features more than 6,000 booths from 1,500 exhibitors across 33 countries, including Nvidia, Qualcomm, and Intel. More than 60,000 visitors have registered.
The pitch comes as Taiwan accounts for more than 60% of global foundry revenue and more than 90% of leading-edge chip manufacturing.
Lai said maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is Taiwan’s most responsible commitment to the global supply chain.
He said existing incentives include a 25% tax credit for qualifying research and development and 5% for advanced manufacturing equipment.
Lai also cited the government’s second phase of the energy transition, which includes more gas-fired generation, diversified renewable energy, energy storage, and grid upgrades.
The focus on power followed Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang’s warning that Taiwan will need more electricity for AI. Lai said Taiwan’s power supply would remain sufficient through 2032, despite debate over whether to restart nuclear plants as AI-driven demand rises.
