The nuclear station – Europe’s largest, with six reactors – was captured by Vladimir Putin’s forces early on in the invasion in March in a perilous siege which included shelling close to the plant. Since then, international concerns over a possible nuclear accident at the plant have spiralled as the Russian authorities have taken increasingly dangerous steps.
