SINGAPORE – The realigned Lim Chu Kang Road, spanning about 8km , will open at 12.30am on June 8 , while the existing stretch will be decommissioned at the same time.

Announcing this on May 26 , the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said the realigned road will comprise a dual three-lane carriageway from Jalan Bahar to the new junction with Old Choa Chu Kang Road, before narrowing into a dual two-lane carriageway.

The road will be extended to form a new signalised T-junction with Jalan Bahar to facilitate the expansion of Tengah Air Base, the authority said in a statement.

The expansion of the 86 -year-old Tengah Air Base is to accommodate the relocation of Paya Lebar Air Base, which will be completed from 2030 onwards.

The expansion of Tengah Air Base will also involve the exhumation of 80,500 graves and affect six farms in the area.

To facilitate the remaining road works that are slated for completion in the third quarter of 2025 , the existing Lim Chu Kang Road will be decommissioned and closed from 12.30am on June 8, said LTA.

These works include reconfiguring the junction between Jalan Bahar and Old Choa Chu Kang Road into a signalised T-junction, following the closure of the existing Lim Chu Kang Road.

They also involve removing parts of the closed sections of Jalan Bahar and Lim Chu Kang Road, noted LTA.

When the realigned road is opened, there will be new footpaths along both sides of the road to enhance pedestrian connectivity.

Eight new bus stops will also be added along the realigned Lim Chu Kang Road, and six bus stops along Jalan Bahar and Old Choa Chu Kang Road will be relocated to better serve commuters, according to LTA.

With the opening of the realigned road, the routes of bus services 172, 405 and 975 will be adjusted.

Service 975 will be rerouted to ply the re aligned Lim Chu Kang Road via Old Choa Chu Kang Road, while service 405 – which operates only during selected festive periods – will skip the closed section of Lim Chu Kang Road.

Services 405 and 172 will continue to travel along Jalan Bahar, but will skip two bus stops that will be removed.

At present, the existing Lim Chu Kang Road is a gazetted heritage road, where a green buffer of 10m on both sides of the road is enforced and the removal of trees or plants is prohibited. A total of 1.8km of the green verges along this road falls within this green buffer , noted LTA.

With the partial road closure and the corresponding removal of green verges, the authority said that the remaining 0.6km stretch of green verges will continue to be designated under the same order.

According to LTA, the National Parks Board (NParks) will further enhance the greenery along this 0.6km stretch of the existing Lim Chu Kang Road. It will add native tree species – including the Asam Gelugor and Island Lychee – to create a multi-tiered native forest landscape that will provide shade for road users and ecological connectivity for biodiversity.

New directional traffic signs will be put up to guide motorists travelling on the realigned road . LTA advised road users to plan their journeys in advance and follow traffic signs on site.
