Rosamund Pike Adopted a Sweet Tradition With Her Co-Stars After Growing Up in the Industry
As early as 19 years old, Rosamund Pike was already making a name for herself in the industry. But while her career has been nothing but admirable since, she was understandably shaky at first, and now she’s paying it forward.
In a conversation with Pride & Prejudice co-star Keira Knightley for Vanity Fair, Pike looked back on working on her first movie, James Bond’s Die Another Day in 2002 with Pierce Brosnan.
“I felt incredibly overwhelmed,” the Gone Girl star admitted. “My character was so sophisticated and dressed in Armani, and I looked so groomed and put together. I had armor, but it also made everybody else assume that I was composed and handling it. And inside I was dying, and longing for someone to sort of reach out and say, ‘Hey, don’t take this too seriously.'”
Since then, Pike has been extra aware of anyone she works with who might need to hear the same thing. “So when I’ve been working in television in the last five years around very young people, I’ve always said to myself, however composed this 22-year-old seems,” she said, with Knightley chiming in, “They’re not.”
“They can do with someone saying, ‘Come over and have a bowl of pasta. Let me cook for you. Come and have a chat,'” Pike said. “And I’ve found that that is received well. I think we can really support each other, because of course you are riddled with things about how you look, how are you acting, how much sleep you’re getting, whether you’re going to be any good the next day.”
Knightley, who also started her career young (she was only 16 years old in Bend It Like Beckham), couldn’t agree more.
“All of those voices of self-doubt are so loud when you are in your teens or 20s,” she said. “But in an adult brain that’s got a lot of experience, you can kind of go, ‘You know what? It’s okay. Today may not be my day, but tomorrow it might be better, and we’re going to try our best.’ And you can kind of talk yourself down off the edge.”
From the looks of it, both of these Hollywood powerhouses are doing their best to show up for their co-stars and all the young actors they work with. It’s all about paying it forward, right?
