After five years in the United Kingdom, one Singaporean says a rough 48 hours have left him wondering whether it's finally time to move home.

In a series of videos posted on Instagram, Abimany, who has spent the past three years in York and two years in Leeds, shared how having his bag stolen and returning to a vandalised apartment happened just as he was deciding whether to remain in Britain after his visa expires.

According to Abimany, the first incident happened after a late-night gym session.

He said he headed for a workout around 11.50pm after watching England's World Cup match and left at about 1am.

When he returned to his locker, his bag was gone. 

The irony? It wasn’t even an expensive bag, but one made of canvas. Inside were his house keys, glasses, his work uniform from fast-food chain and bakery Greggs, and £2 (S$3.42) in cash.

Interestingly, he shared that he didn’t lock his locker, saying: “I’ve been doing this for two years, I don’t lock my stuff, and people don’t lock their stuff in the gym.”

He added that there were only six people in the gym at the time, leaving him convinced the thief had to be one of them.

Unfortunately, the night was about to get worse. When Abimany finally made it back to his apartment, he discovered it had been vandalised. 

The double blow left him questioning whether it was a sign to move back to Singapore, especially given where he currently is in life.

“I've been living in the UK for five years and this is the first time I've faced something like this. How ironic that it's happening when my visa is expiring and I've been on the fence about staying in the UK or returning to Singapore,” he wrote, adding it probably is another reason to leave.

8days.sg has reached out to Abimany for comment but did not receive a response by press time.

But in a video posted later on June 26, Abimany said he managed to recover his bag.

According to him, it had been handed in at a Greggs outlet and suspects whoever took it may have noticed the work uniform inside.

For now, Abimany has yet to reveal whether he has made a final decision about staying in Britain or returning to Singapore.

Netizens were most in favour of Abimany leaving, even if not back to Singapore, but at least Leeds.

“I stayed in Leeds for four years, and I relocated to another country,” one commented.

Others took the opportunity to remind him what he was missing back home.

One wrote: “You wanted UK, bro, but this stuff happened, you are thinking of coming back to Singapore, you should have thought about the pros and cons before planning to leave for the UK. After all, Singapore is the best place to be in.”
