INVESTING in renewable energy, embracing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, and prioritising community sustainability are not just policy directions.

They reflect our shared commitment towards shaping a family-focused, green, smart, and inclusive Penang which is in line with the Penang2030 vision.

Deputy Chief Minister II Jagdeep Singh shared this during the launch of SAM Malaysia’s solar panel project at its Bukit Minyak premises today.

“I encourage more corporations in Penang and across Malaysia to draw inspiration from SAM.

“What SAM has achieved today is a strong demonstration of how the private sector can complement Penang2030’s sustainability roadmap.

“At the state level, we continue to lead the way in promoting renewable energy, sustainable mobility, environmental conservation, and waste reduction,” Jagdeep said.

He also added that these milestones support the ‘Green and Smart’ pillars of the Penang2030 vision.

Apart from that, Jagdeep said that SAM Engineering & Equipment has been recognised in the FTSE4Good Index, a globally respected benchmark for ESG excellence.

“This recognition places SAM among leading international companies that uphold sustainable business practices.

“It also aligns directly with Penang2030’s vision of building a competitive yet inclusive economy that meets global standards while serving the needs of our people.

“May this solar panel project, together with your FTSE4Good recognition, be a stepping stone towards even greater sustainability milestones ahead,” he added.

Among other initiatives by SAM are tree planting activities held in conjunction with Earth Day, in collaboration with the Penang Forestry Department.

The company also organised a mangrove planting activity at Pantai Malindo and a beach cleaning programme at Permatang Damar Laut, with support from the Penang Island City Council (MBPP).

In addition, SAM played a key role as the main sponsor and co-organiser of the ‘Anugerah Komuniti Mampan’ with the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP), an initiative that empowers grassroots sustainability champions and promotes community-driven environmental efforts.

Meanwhile, SAM Malaysia chief operating officer Eric Kong said that the solar panel project, is a milestone that reflects SAM Engineering & Equipment’s strong commitment to sustainability, innovation, and a greener future.

Representing the company’s chief executive officer BK Ng, Kong delivered the speech and said that the project is more than just a facility upgrade, it marks a significant step forward in reducing their environmental footprint while embracing clean energy solutions.

“The project, which commenced in March, has a total installed capacity of 3.639 megawatts-peak (MWp), making it a significant contribution to our renewable energy portfolio.

“With this system, we are expected to generate 5 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of clean electricity annually, enough to power thousands of households each year.

“Importantly, this project will help us offset approximately 3,206 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO₂) every year, a meaningful step in combating climate change and preserving our environment for future generations.

“To make this possible, we have installed 5,822 pieces of Tier One 625 N-type solar panels, paired with 22 state-of-the-art Huawei Smart Inverters to ensure maximum efficiency and reliability,” he said.

Kong said that beyond solar energy generation, the company is also integrating sustainable mobility into the project.

“The system is equipped with two 22kW AC electric vehicle (EV) chargers, supported by the PowerBee app, offering smart and convenient EV charging solutions to support the future of green transportation.

“I would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to YB Jagdeep for gracing this event with his presence and for his continuous support in driving Penang’s sustainability agenda under Penang2030.

“Your leadership inspires companies like ours to pursue impactful initiatives for the community and the environment,” he added.

Also present were, industrial advisor to DCM II J Philip Vincent, SAM Engineering & Equipment (M) Berhad senior director of human resources Datuk Vijay Subrayan, and Solarvest Holdings Berhad group vice-president Jack Tan.
