SDP Candidate Dr Gigene Wong Issues Two Apologies after Using Racial Slur to Describe Teammate during Election Rally
Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) candidate Dr Gigene Wong issued two apologies after using a racial slur to describe her fellow party candidate, Ariffin Sha, during a rally at Evergreen Primary School on 26 Apr 2025.
She referred to Mr Ariffin, 27, as “keling kia”.
The term “keling kia” is widely recognised in Singapore as a racial slur and is considered highly offensive by the Indian community.
Dr Wong, 59, made the comments while speaking in a mix of Mandarin, English, and Hokkien.

"We are not anti-vax, I have to stress that. We are pro-safe vax, and we are pro-informed consent. It means you must tell us what are the list of side effects, and I consider my own body condition whether I can take the risk," emphasising that it is "reckless" for the current Government to impose such requirements without making sure that the vaccination is "300 per cent safe".
