The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has recalled a melon seed product from China due to the presence of food additives.

Ji Xiang Special Grade Black Melon Seed was found to contain cyclamate and saccharin exceeding permitted levels.

The importer, Guangdong Import & Export Pte Ltd, has been directed to recall the implicated product, which has a packing date of Aug 23, 2024, and weighs 1kg.

The recall is ongoing, said SFA on Oct 8.

Cyclamate, also known as cyclamic acid, and saccharin are permitted food additives used as artificial sweeteners. They are approved for use in certain food products such as soft drinks and canned fruits.

However, the use of cyclamate is currently not allowed in nuts and seeds products, while the use of saccharin for nuts and seeds products is permitted up to a maximum limit as stated in Singapore's Food Regulations.

SFA added: "While there are no immediate health risks from consuming nuts and seeds products found to contain cyclamate and saccharin, prolonged excessive consumption of both sweeteners should be avoided.

"Nonetheless, SFA is taking a precautionary approach, and is currently conducting proactive sampling and testing of nuts and seeds products in Singapore."
