PETALING JAYA: Sepang International Circuit (SIC) could be in line for a major makeover, with management considering resurfacing works following growing concerns over the condition of the track.

The circuit has endured a hectic few months, hosting the Bahrain Grand Prix of Malaysia last month before welcoming the two-wheeled spectacle of the Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix last weekend.

However, the back-to-back events have also brought the track's ageing surface into focus, with several drivers and MotoGP riders highlighting rough patches that affected grip and stability, particularly on two wheels.

SIC chief executive officer Azhan Shafriman Hanif said no decision had been made, with the management weighing the technical requirements against the financial implications.

"The decision will depend on our research and how it will affect us financially. Of course, we will also consider what the riders, MotoGP and FIM need, as they have indicated that the track requires resurfacing," said Azhan.

"We also feel it should be resurfaced, but we need to consider all the factors before making a decision.

"Whether we opt for partial or full resurfacing will depend on the comprehensive report we receive from MotoGP and FIM."

Azhan revealed that SIC had considered resurfacing the track earlier this year, but the ongoing conflict in the Middle East had driven up material costs, particularly bitumen.

Instead, the circuit underwent milling, a process that removes the damaged top layer of the track surface, as a temporary measure. Resurfacing had also previously been completed on sections between Turns Seven and 12.

He said any further resurfacing would also have to take into account the circuit's booking schedule, as SIC already had commitments in December and January.
