San Francisco has told Apple and Google to remove dozens of “nudify” apps from their app stores, saying the software can create non-consensual intimate deepfakes and may violate California law.
City Attorney David Chiu’s office said in letters that both companies had been warned for nearly a year that their stores hosted apps selling non-consensual intimate deepfakes and that Apple and Google were processing related payments.
Chiu’s office said the warnings included reports and letters from the Tech Transparency Project in January and April.
Earlier Tech Transparency Project investigations found repeated availability of nudify apps in both stores.
One report estimated that 18 apps on Apple’s App Store and 20 on Google Play had generated about US$122 million in revenue and 483 million downloads.
The letters give Apple and Google 28 days to respond or risk possible civil penalties under California law.
