Police are responding to an "active situation" in Santa Monica, California, after a man reportedly shot at officers before barricading himself in a building. One officer was reportedly injured by gunfire, according to unconfirmed reports.  Santa Monica Police said: "Please avoid the area near Santa Monica Place. Officers are responding to an active situation. Updates and additional information will be provided once available. Thank you for your patience and cooperation."

Police said members of the public should avoid the area near Santa Monica Place (4th St & Colorado) to allow emergency personnel to respond safely and efficiently. The department added: "One of our officers sustained injuries during the incident and was transported to a local hospital for medical care. This remains an evolving situation. Additional details will be shared as they are confirmed and when appropriate to do so."

Santa Monica Police has confirmed via the official X account that the shooter suspect has been taken into custody.

The post states:

"The suspect involved in today’s shooting of an SMPD officer has been arrested.

"He has also been confirmed as the individual wanted in connection with the recent Waymo vehicle shooting.

WATCH: Shooter arrested according to multiple reports

The alleged shooter has been caught according to multiple local reports, including perported eye witnesses, scanner monitoring X accounts and published CCTV.

Incident has turned into a police siege at Broadway and 3rd Street

Police have since blocked off Colorado and Broadway Westbound at 5th Street as the incident escalated into a barricade situation, according to the Santa Monica Observer.

“Talking to our friends who live at Broadway and 3rd Street and police are telling stay inside. They’re locking the door. Their 17yo daughter is yelling that she wants ‘outta here.’ She’s over it,” one poster wrote on social media.

An officer was wounded during a shooting near a busy shopping area in Santa Monica, though they are expected to make a recovery, reports ABC 7.

Members of the public have been urged to stay away from the scene as the manhunt continues.

Santa Monica Police have released an image and desciption of the active shooter at large in the area via its X account:

"Description: Male, Black, Approximate age: 30s

"Wearing a dark-colored jacket and black pants

LA Metro transport issues alert

In a statement on X, LA Metro said: "E LINE: Trains will be turning back to East LA at 17th St/SMC Station with no train service between 17th/SMC and Downtown Santa Monica due to police activity near the downtown station.

Reports suggest a Santa Monica Police officer was shot and wounded at around 1.45pm local time (June 25) in Parking Structure 7, in Downtown Santa Monica. 

The officer who sustained injuries during the incident and was transported to a local hospital for medical care.

Suspect still at large

The gunman is still at large and is believed to have run into a parking garage. Witnesses say he dropped a phone and a gun magazine while he ran. 

Police have urged people to stay away from the area, and roads are closed. Reports suggest an officer was sho,t but these are unconfirmed at the time.
