MIRI (July 11): The 2025 Sarawak Classical Odyssey will be held here on Aug 23 at SM Pei Min.

Organised by SCO Productions, the event themed ‘Education Over Competition’ will provide a transformative platform to nurture young talents and strengthen music education in the region.

Miri-born pianist and SCO Productions founder Cherly Jong Yun Xin said the concert would be a first step in the effort to establish a vibrant, sustainable classical music ecosystem in East Malaysia.

She hopes that performances, masterclasses, and community initiatives would connect the music scenes in East and Peninsula Malaysia, as well as inspire the next generation of artistes.

“I know I can’t change the entire environment, but I can start with one small event. This is not merely a music event, it’s my heartfelt gift to my hometown. I hope it can plant the first seed for classical music in Sarawak,” said Jong.

The one-day programme will begin with a Piano Masterclass at the SM Pei Min School Auditorium at 8.30am conducted by Malaysian piano educator and UCSI University Institute of Music dean Prof Dr P’ng Tean Hwa.

This will be followed by a Music Teacher’s Seminar at Blue Cottage Coffee at 3pm and finally the Piano-Vocal Concert at 7.30pm at the SM Pei Min School Auditorium.

The concert will showcase a special performance by Jong and soprano Alicia Lim.
