KUCHING (July 9): The team registered as ‘Sarawak B’ secured a joint third-place finish in the boy’s category of the 2nd Sarawak National Youth 3-Star Kabaddi Championships at the Youth and Sports Department (KBS) Sarawak Sports Complex last Sunday.

In the group stage they edged past Pulau Pinang 22–20, lost 17–24 to Kuala Lumpur but bounced back to thrash Kelantan 37–7. The team put up a spirited fight before falling 19–27 to Kedah in the semi-finals to share the bronze medal with Negeri Sembilan.

The other three Sarawak teams – another in the boys’ category and two in the girl’s division – did not progress past the group stage. Perak emerged as girl’s champions after defeating Kedah in the final while Kelantan and Kuala Lumpur settled for joint third.

Despite Sarawak missing out on a place in the final, head coach Ganisan Punisamy expressed satisfaction, considering the team’s composition of all new and young players. Sarawak State Sports Council acting director Khairul Nizam Morshidi officiated the closing ceremony of the tournament.
