A 75-year-old man in Ipoh was found dead at his house in Lorong Jelapang 13 yesterday (August 15). According to the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), he had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police reported that the man shot himself in the chest with a Baretta D81735B shotgun, for which he had held a firearm license since 1995.

Ipoh District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad, stated that PDRM received a call regarding the incident at 11:35 am. The senior citizen was found unconscious when authorities arrived at the scene.

He was later pronounced dead by medical personnel from Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun.

Abang Zainal confirmed that despite the self-inflicted nature of the wound, police found no elements of foul play. The case has been classified as a sudden death (SDR).

The deceased had been suffering from Stage 4 colon cancer and was living with his wife, eldest son, daughter-in-law, and grandchild. However, none of the family members were home at the time of the incident.

PDRM managed to speak with the victim’s youngest son, who said his father had called him around 10:35 am, asking him to come over. Instead, the son asked his sister-in-law to check on him.

He was shocked when she informed him that his father was found unconscious on a wooden chair outside the house, as reported by Utusan and Sinar Harian.

The body has been sent to the hospital for a post-mortem examination. Police are currently taking statements from family members to assist with the investigation.
