Amy Poehlerand Seth Meyers admit they haven’t always been a good hang.

The Saturday Night Livealums revealed that during their time together on the sketch series together, where they were also coanchors on the recurring Weekend Update segment of the show, the pair would often butt heads during one key moment ahead of showtime.

“I feel like the most tense our chemistry ever had was Update mornings—bagel times,” Seth told Amy during the June 3 episode of her Good Hangpodcast. “‘Cause someone had pre-split the jokes and then there were a few left over that we both wanted. And I feel like there was a real dance.”

But while Amy thought she was being sly by attempting to take what she saw as the best jokes, Seth said he recognized her tactics, even calling out one of her sneaky methods.

“Here’s how I saw it from you: ‘Hmm, that feels like an Amy joke. Do you want it?’” he said while impersonating the Parks & Recreation actress. “And I’d be like, ‘I mean, I would love it. It would mean a lot to me. As a friend, I’m asking for it.’ And you’re like, ‘It’s a real Amy joke.’”

For her part, Amy admitted she would use any tool she could to keep the best jokes, adding through laughter, “I would go, ‘I hex this joke!’ I would hex it. ‘I curse you and I curse this joke.’”

Despite copping to some mild tension during their overlapping SNL years, the pair insisted their working relationship was strong, with Amy noting, “I don’t remember us ever fighting at all.”

Seth agreed, sharing that he credits Amy and Saturday Night Live producer Mike Shoemaker’s belief in him as the source of his success on the Lorne Michaels-created show.

“To be honest, one of the things I feel most grateful for is I don’t know [what you saw in me],” Seth explained. “I didn’t see it. I know to this day I don’t make it onto that show without you guys. And I think that I was very lucky that Lornesaw me through your eyes.”
