SIBU (Dec 30): Seven units of a barrack block at the 10th Battalion General Operations Force (GOF) camp in Jalan Lanang here were destroyed in a fire yesterday evening.

Sibu Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) chief Andy Alie said they received a distress call at 7.05pm and dispatched 21 firefighters from the Sibu Central and Sungai Merah fire stations to the location.

“The fire involved a 10-unit barrack block measuring 200 feet by 40 feet. Seven units were completely destroyed, one slightly damaged, and two not affected,” he said in a statement today.

Andy said 18 occupants of the affected units managed to escape to safety, with no report of injuries received.

The fire was brought under control at 8.15pm and fully extinguished at 9.42pm.

Bomba is investigating the cause of the fire and from which unit it originated from.

Losses suffered by those affected have yet to be ascertained.
