Sharing festive cheer, one soft toy at a time
FOR Christmas this year, consider giving your loved ones cute collectables in the form of cuddly panda plushies. In doing so, one would also contribute to a charitable effort as proceeds from the sale will go towards an orphanage fund. The sale, which ends on Jan 1, 2020, is an initiative by FHI Group of Hotels, which comprises The Federal Kuala Lumpur, Hotel Capitol Kuala Lumpur and Tribeca Serviced Suites. The cute plushies, priced at RM30, are available for sale at the reception counters of each hotel in the group. The limited-edition plushies that come with a Santa hat are priced at RM50. FHI Group marketing sales and business development and operations director Ooi Lee Ping said sale proceeds would go towards the orphans’ education, meals, schooling expenses and maintenance of Pertubuhan Kebajikan Anak Yatim Mary (PKAYM) in Kuala Lumpur. “We want the children to know we care about and remember them during this joyous festivity,” Ooi said. Malar Matthews (pic), 43, who has been running the orphanage for the past 16 years said, “We have been invited to this evening’s feast annually for the past 10 years. We are very grateful for the support,” she said. Matthews said the orphanage currently housed 50 children aged five to 19. At the event’s launch at The Federal Kuala Lumpur, 19 children from PKAYM were also feted to an evening tea. They were served pizza and sandwiches, and sweet delectables. Also present at the event were five national athletes — synchronised swimmer Zylane Lee Yhing Huey, air pistol shooter Johnathan Wong Guanjie, ice skaters Chew Kai Xiang and Chew Sze Chyi and dodgeball player Jesslyn Chan. FHI marketing communications and business development senior manager May Lee hoped the athletes would be an inspiration to the children.
