Hong Kong singer Chantel Yiu, who is currently studying at New York University (NYU), shared snippets of her college life, but drew ire for her choice of transportation to school instead. 

“Sophomore year has started. Week 1,” said the 19-year-old TVB star on Instagram, who is currently studying Music Business at NYU.

Chantel also shared a selfie of herself in a car, with the caption: “Ubering to school because it’s too far and I have no other transportation options,” accompanied by a sad emoticon.

“Jokes! I’m just lazy,” she then quipped in another photo.

Many netizens were intrigued by her choice of transport, with some even remarking that it’s “crazy” to take a taxi in New York.

“Genuinely just too lazy to walk,” Chantel then replied.

What Chantel was not expecting, however, was for a netizen to share a post on Threads criticising her.

The netizen argued that the area around NYU is well connected by public transport, with subway and train stations just a few minutes’ walk away.

They also noted that there are trains that can take commuters to areas near the campus, and argued that Chantel's claim of having “no other transportation options” was merely an excuse.

The netizen then sarcastically remarked: “In the world of the wealthy, the train may be nothing more than a decorative feature on a map.”

Some also agreed that taking a taxi in New York is “insanely expensive” and prone to getting stuck in traffic.

“Taking an Uber in NYC can sometimes be even worse. It can seriously make you want to throw up,” one commenter wrote.

Others, however, defended Chantel.

“Whether she has the money to take an Uber or chooses to ride a Citi Bike is her business,” argued a netizen.

We mean, it's her money to spend after all, no?
