Sheffield United robbed as goalline technology fails and Aston Villa claim draw on Premier League return
The new normal was not that different after all. After so much planning and detail to get games back on, it was almost inevitable that something else went wrong. And sure enough, the Premier Leagues first game back in Project Restart will forever be remembered for the goal that never was. An all-time clanger.Sheffield Uniteds Oliver Norwood was denied an obvious goal after Aston Villa keeper Orjan Nyland carried the ball over his own goal line.Incredibly, the goal line technology failed, referee Michael Olivers watch did not buzz and it was left to dozens of TV replays to show the ball was miles over the line.Orjan Nyland of Aston Villa appeared to carry the ball over the goalline (Image: Getty Images)Read MoreRelated ArticlesRead MoreRelated ArticlesYou had to feel sorry for Oliver as the VAR did not intervene either and the Premier Leagues top referee will forever be haunted by replays which will also be a permanent reminder that lockdown left us all looking like we needed a trip to the hairdressers. In fact, the only comfort was there were no fans there to scream blue murder at the referee and the sense of injustice as Chris Wilders men were denied a victory to take them up into fifth place. For poor old Villa, it was a let-off but also a familiar story of plenty of hard work, endeavour and effort but the lack of goals and a proven goalscorer is ultimately what might take them down. But for those of us lucky enough to be in the stadium, it was an intense game and, at times, you got so wrapped up in it you could almost forget the surreal occasion.Oliver Norwood of Sheffield United speaks to referee Michael Oliver as he checks his watch (Image: Getty Images)Read MoreRelated ArticlesIt was brilliantly organised, just under 300 in the stadium - mostly TV, broadcasters and media - to watch the first instalment of the top flights return after 100 days.A minutes silence before the game, every player took a knee for the Black Lives Matter campaign.Make no mistake, the Premier League have got this down to military precision as everyone parks up, gets their temperature taken, is directed to their seat and it worked perfectly.Everything was clearly marked, the stadium concourse with yellow tape and arrows to tell you where to go and a smattering of seats filled to hear United boss Wilder and his Villa counterpart Dean Smiths screams echo around the place.Aston Villa's Tyrone Mings in action with Sheffield United's Lys Mousset (Image: REUTERS)Read MoreRelated ArticlesThe biggest problem for Smith was that there were no signs directing his strikers towards goal. Rookie striker Keinan Davis was a surprise starter, he used all of his strength and muscle to bully Uniteds defence and caused all manner of problems. But Davis headed a great first-half chance over from almost underneath the crossbar, centre back Kortney Hause also wasted a close range chance while fit-again John McGinn was denied by a super save from United keeper Dean Henderson.Whether the whole thing was quite as engrossing for armchair viewers watching on TV at home is another matter but at least they would have got instant replays of the nights biggest talking point. That came after 42 minutes when Norwood swung over a free kick from the left, Nyland went up to catch the ball, rather collided with Davis and carried the ball back over his goal line.Aston Villa players take a drinks break in the first half of the Premier League match (Image: PA)Mirror Football's Top StoriesUniteds players screamed goal, Nyland did his best to carry on as if nothing had happened, got himself back on the right side of the goal line and threw it forward.Olivers watch did not go off, Villa raced down the other end and the reality is that goal line technology has been so reliable that Oliver probably did not realise anything was wrong and, as soon as another free kick was given, VAR can no longer step in.The moment was gone. It was strangely entertaining to see Uniteds data analysts watch the TV replays in the sparsely populated press box and then rush down to join the protests. But just over three months on, another controversial moment made it feel like football had never been away.
