CCTV shows Ross Monaghan attempting to escape killer in Spain

This is the harrowing moment a gunman chases Ross Monaghan through his Costa del Sol pub before shooting him dead—just seconds after executing fellow Scots gangster Eddie Lyons Jnr outside. Shocking footage aired on Spanish TV on Monday shows the assassin, dressed entirely in black, pursuing Mr Monaghan through the bar in Fuengirola before the Glaswegian collapses to his knees, helpless.

Two innocent bystanders—thought to include a waitress and another man in black whose identity remains unclear—can be seen running for cover as the killer calmly fires at least four bullets into Mr Monaghan’s chest and stomach from point-blank range. The graphic images were broadcast this morning on Telecinco’s El Programa de Ana Rosa and showed the 43-year-old—understood to be the owner of Mr Monaghan’s Fuengirola bar where the attack unfolded—trying to crawl away before appearing to turn and lock eyes with his killer.

Seconds later, he slumps against a wall, blood soaking through his white T-shirt, as his life ebbs away.

The killer, who has not yet been apprehended, was wearing a black baseball cap, black jacket, black shorts, and a white T-shirt around his neck which is thought to have been used as a face covering.

Reports suggest Mr Monaghan was only able to flee briefly because the attacker’s weapon jammed after the fatal shooting of Lyons Jnr outside.

Until today, the only images released from the attack were stills and video of Lyons Jnr’s body lying dead on his back on the terrace, dressed in shorts and a T-shirt, later covered by a blanket.

Spanish police confirmed this morning no arrests had yet been made. A spokesman said: "The investigation is continuing into the fatal shooting of two men at a pub in Fuengirola, with nothing new at the moment."

The spokesman also dismissed claims made yesterday by a government representative for the Malaga region that a third person had been injured and hospitalised. "There is no record of another person or people being injured," he said.

The gunman escaped on foot before meeting up with an accomplice waiting in a car nearby. Police have since retraced part of the escape route along the old N-340 dual carriageway heading towards Benalmádena, although they have yet to reveal details about the getaway vehicle.

Officers from Spain’s elite Costa del Sol-based National Police Anti-Drug and Organised Crime Unit (UDYCO) are leading the investigation under the supervision of a local investigating judge.

Court officials are expected to confirm later today that a secrecy order—known in Spain as a secreto de sumario—has been imposed on the case, restricting access to sensitive details and limiting what public officials can reveal.

Some local reports say witnesses described the shooter as a "blonde man," and that investigators suspect British nationals were behind the gangland double killing, although police have not commented.

A National Police spokesman said in the force’s only official statement so far: "Around midnight on Saturday, an incident with firearms occurred in Fuengirola, specifically at an entertainment venue along the seafront. Two males died as a result from gunshot wounds. The investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made so far.”

A British woman who answered the phone at Monaghan’s Irish bar yesterday morning declined to comment, saying she had been instructed by police not to speak.

Monaghan fled Scotland after surviving a gun attack outside a Glasgow primary school in 2017. He had previously been acquitted of the 2010 murder of Kevin ‘Gerbil’ Carroll, who was shot dead in a car park outside an Asda supermarket.

In August 2017, both Monaghan and Lyons Jnr—key figures in the Lyons crime family—were cleared of involvement in a brutal assault on three men outside the Campsie Bar in Bishopbriggs, East Dunbartonshire.

The killings come amid an ongoing gangland feud which has rocked Scotland since March and is believed to have been triggered by a dispute over drugs.

Saturday’s murders follow the shooting of a 32-year-old British man in nearby Calahonda on April 21. The victim—believed to be from Liverpool—was gunned down around 8pm as he returned to his car following a football match. He died at the scene in what police are treating as a gangland hit. His killers fled in a getaway car which was later torched. No arrests have been made.

That incident was the fourth shooting in April on the Costa del Sol, where violence between rival drug gangs has escalated sharply in recent months and international criminal networks are known to operate.

Just four days earlier, a 34-year-old man was hospitalised after being shot outside a nightclub in Marbella.

Monaghan’s Fuengirola bar promotes itself online as a “family friendly sports bar and restaurant” serving “great home cooked meals” with a sunny terrace and live sports. Located in Torreblanca, just east of the town centre and near Los Boliches, it sits opposite one of the area’s most popular beaches.
