Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has unveiled his new Cabinet line-up. In Singapore, the Cabinet is one of three “organs of state”: the Executive, which implements government policies; the Legislature, which makes laws; and the Judiciary, which interprets and enforces them. Cabinet ministers are usually drawn from elected Members of Parliament (MPs), which is why you see familiar faces from Parliament also serving as Ministers. For example, if the Legislature makes a law, the Cabinet enforces it, and if someone breaks the law, they’re tried by the Judiciary.
In Singapore, citizens vote for MPs, not individual ministers. The Cabinet is formed by the Prime Minister, who selects MPs to take up ministerial roles. This process differs from places like the US, where appointments need legislative approval. Once formed, the Cabinet includes key figures such as the Deputy Prime Minister (DPM), Minister of Health, Minister of Defence, and more , all working under the Prime Minister’s leadership.
This new Cabinet brings some major changes. Instead of two DPMs like before, there is now only one : Gan Kim Yong, who continues to serve as both DPM and Minister for Trade and Industry. He gained public recognition during the COVID-19 pandemic and has since become a familiar face in Singapore’s leadership. Alongside him, three Coordinating Ministers have been appointed: K Shanmugam (National Security), Chan Chun Sing (Public Services), and Ong Ye Kung (Social Policies). These roles involve overseeing cross-ministry coordination, think of them as “wedding planners” who ensure various ministries work together smoothly.
Some fresh faces have also entered the Cabinet. David Neo, known for his poetic speech during GE2025, becomes Acting Minister for Culture, Community, and Youth, and also a Senior Minister of State in Education. Jeffrey Siow will handle transport issues as Acting Minister for Transport and serve in the Ministry of Finance. Notably, Labour Chief Ng Chee Meng has opted out of the Cabinet for now to focus on union and MP duties, breaking a longstanding tradition.
