Experts believe the actual number could exceed 1 billion daily due to automated scripts and botnets. While many cyberattacks are financially motivated, those targeting national infrastructure are typically backed by state actors and intended to cause disruption or gather intelligence. Singapore’s military has a Digital and Intelligence Service (DIS) to defend against such threats. UNC3886 is a cyber threat group that was recently named by Singapore's Coordinating Minister for National Security, K Shanmugam, during a speech on 18 July 2025. The group is known to target critical infrastructure such as defense, telecommunications, and government systems, and is believed to be a state-sponsored espionage group with links to China, according to Google’s cybersecurity firm Mandiant. Cyberattacks against Singapore have increased significantly from 2021 to 2024, and UNC3886 was reportedly launching attacks even as the minister was speaking. Following the disclosure, the Chinese embassy in Singapore strongly denied any connection to UNC3886, expressing dissatisfaction over the reports and claiming that China is also a frequent victim of cyberattacks. In a lighter moment, Singaporeans were quick to buy 4D tickets for the number 3886 after the news broke.
