Some of Britain's roughest pubs where murder, fighting and drug busts have taken place

There are some pubs most of us aim to avoid for fear of what might happen inside

Whether you're in the heart of a busy city or escaping to a sleepy countryside village, you'll never be far from a pub in Britain.

Everyone tends to have their favourite type of pub, even if the only reason you love it is that it's your local and you know everyone who goes there.

But we all know that some boozers have better reputations than others.

Some are just the sorts of places many of us would rather avoid while others have genuinely been on the wrong side of the law in the past.

And so the Daily Star decided to compile a list of some of the roughest and toughest pubs in the country.

Sadly some of them are no longer in business although it's still worth mentioning them even if just for a good story to tell.

The Swordfish Inn, Newlyn, Penzance, Cornwall

Predictably enough given its location, the Swordfish is a popular haunt with the fisherman who bring their haul of fish to shore.

It was known for its drink of choice for sailors - not a group of people usually averse to a heavy drinking session.
