Spaceballs 2: Mel Brooks, Keke Palmer and More Castings Revealed
Mel Brooks is heading back to the galaxy far, far away.
The actor is set to reprise his role in a new Spaceballs movie, Amazon MGM Studios announced June 12. The film will be released in theatres in 2027, just in time for the original 1987 Star Wars parody film's 40th anniversary.
Mel teased his return in a Star Wars-style intro video on June 12 with text on the screen listing the countless sequels, prequels and series that came of many classic film franchises including Jurassic Park and Avatar. The text concluded with, "But in thirty-eight years, there has only been one... SPACEBALLS. Until now..."
The 98-year-old then appeared on-screen, wearing a black crewneck with the words, "Spaceballs: The Sweatshirt," and said, "After 40 years we asked, 'What do the fans want?' But instead, we're making this movie."
Mel will be reprising his original role as Yogurt, according to the studio, which stated in a press release that "the title, plot details, and rest of cast are being kept under wraps."
For those curious to know what the film may look like? As the release put it, "The film has been described by those who have not yet read the script as 'A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.'"
And while the press release noted the rest of the cast isn't being publicized just yet, sources shared with Deadline that Bill Pullman and Rick Moranis are also set to reprise their original roles as Lone Starr and Dark Helmet, respectively, and that Keke Palmer will join them in the cast, as well. A source also told The Hollywood Reporter that Thunderbolts* star Lewis Pullman will be joining his father in the film.
Until more details are announced, Mel's video left fans with the film's original catchphrase, "May the Schwartz be with you."
