Squid Game Creator Says The Show’s ‘VIP’ Villains “Do Kind Of Resemble Elon Musk”

The Netflix hit series Squid Game has finally ended on its third and final season. Although fans of the dystopian-thriller are hoping for more, the show’s director, Hwang Dong Hyuk, has basically confirmed that the end really means The End.

(PSA: Spoilers ahead.)

During an interview with the media, Hwang Dong Hyuk revealed that he had come across news sites reporting on a Hollywood remake of the series, which also included filming dates, and a potential cast and storyline. It was even stated that the South Korean director would be a consultant or have a directorial role on set.

Dong Hyuk firmly rubbished the rumours.

He mentioned that there aren’t any plans for a remake of the show at all. As for Cate Blanchett’s cameo in the final episode? He explained her appearance was simply meant to highlight the fact that although the Squid Games were put to an end in Korea, similar organisations still exist elsewhere in the world.

It also turns out that the antagonists of the show, aka the VIPs, were inspired by the rich and powerful, like.. Elon Musk.

Speaking to Time magazine, Dong Hyuk said: “Elon Musk is everywhere these days, right? Everybody talks about him. Not only is he the head of a huge tech company that controls the world almost, but he’s also this showman. After writing [this season], of course I thought, ‘Oh, some of the VIPs do kind of resemble Elon Musk.”

Admitting that his VIP characters draw a parallel to the billionaire tech mogul, he continued: “They used to hide behind the scenes, but now it’s the other way around. They’re taking off their masks, publicly declaring: We control everything.”

Dong Hyuk also revealed that he initially wanted to give the show a happy ending, instead of having lead actor Lee Jung Jae’s Player 456 character sacrifice his life.

However, upon considering real-life factors such as social inequality, and financial and climate crises, he felt it important to think about “what we can leave behind for the next generation”.

As such, he made the decision to have the baby represent the future, and for Player 456’s demise to convey the message: “Even when put in extremely tough situations, we can still maintain our conscience and make the right choices.”

Now, who would’ve thought that Netflix’s most successful series would also be such a heavy commentary on society?
