Step Inside Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin’s Universe After Their Breakup

E! News·2025-06-05 06:01

Sadly, nothing is going to fix Chris Martin and Dakota Johnson’s romance.

Indeed, the couple has called it quits eight years after they first began dating in 2017, and confirmed their engagement last March, multiple sources told People

E! News has reached out to reps for Chris and Dakota but has not yet heard back.

The Coldplay frontman—who shares Apple Martin, 21, and Moses Martin, 19, with ex Gwyneth Paltrow—and the Fifty Shades of Grey star were first linked in October 2017 when they were photographed grabbing a bite at the celebrity hot spot Sushi Park in Los Angeles.

Chris and Dakota were seen out several times in the following months, with Dakota even attending one of Martin’s concerts in Buenos Aires, Argentina, for Coldplay’s Head Full of Dreams tour.

As their romance progressed, Dakota became a regular fixture at Chris’ shows, and even toured with him, but it wasn’t until her dad Don Johnson seemingly confirmed their romance in January 2018 that the relationship became official.

At the time, Don joked his daughter dating Chris was “troubling,” to Digital Spy, before assuring, “No, she's a big girl, she can handle herself!”

Later that same year, the couple sparked pregnancy rumors when TMZ reported they had thrown a gender reveal party at Chris’ Los Angeles home—which saw Dakota’s dad and mom Melanie Griffith, as well as Julia Roberts in attendance.

However, the Social Network alum shut down the noise in an Ellen interview saying, “The only thing I’m pregnant with is a lot of really good ideas, but not any babies.”

Despite not welcoming any children of her own, Dakota was quickly welcomed by Chris’ children and ex shortly after the false alarm. In fact, the Goop founder formally gave her stamp of approval in November 2018.

“Gwyneth thinks she is lovely,” a source told E! News. “She gets on very well with her and is happy for Chris. They've spent a good amount of time together and have a very nice friendship."

Rest assured, the kids were just as welcoming, with the source adding, “The kids really like Dakota and enjoy spending time with her.”

However, the pair’s first roadblock came in 2019, when multiple outlets claimed the pair had split up. In August of that year, Dakota and Chris laid the rumors to rest when he supported her at a wrap party for her film The High Note, as seen in photos shared to social media. A source later confirmed they were still together, telling E! News at the time, “They're planning to spend more time together later this summer.”

The insider also added that an engagement was imminent for the couple, and, in 2024, they confirmed they had been engaged for “years.”

And on the couple continued in para-para paradise. For Dakota’s birthday that fall, Gwyneth proved Dakota and Chris were as strong as ever by sharing a happy birthday post for her—and her friendship with Dakota only continued to grow with time.

“I love her,” Gwyneth told Harper’s Bazaar in 2020. “I can see how it would seem weird because it’s sort of unconventional. But I think, in this case, just having passed through it iteratively, I just adore her.”

The feeling was mutual for Dakota—especially when it came to her relationship with Chris’ kids.

“I love those kids like my life depends on it,” she told Bustle last year. “With all my heart.”

By late 2024, breakup rumors began to surface once more—but a rep for the couple told E! News at the time that it was “not true,” adding, “They are happily together.”

Less than a year later, though, Dakota and Chris’ breakup was confirmed. Keep reading for a deeper look into their romance…

Let the romance rumors begin! After Dakota Johnson was spotted at a Coldplay concert, fans started to speculate that the actress could be dating Chris Martin. While the pair didn't confirm anything for months, a few additional sightings suggested these two were more than just friends.

While attending the launch of Stella McCartney's Women's Autumn 2018 and Men's Autumn/Winter 2018 Collections at SIR Studios, the pair was spotted holding hands, giving fans further confirmation they were dating.

In an interview with Tatler, Dakota confirmed she was dating Chris with a simple message. "I'm not going to talk about it," she told the publication. "But I am very happy."

After Chris supported Dakota at her star-studded 30th birthday party in October, the actress returned the favor when it was time for her boyfriend to perform on Saturday Night Live. The pair celebrated the special show by attending the official after-party together.

The Fifty Shades of Grey alum donned her director's hat for Coldplay's "Cry, Cry, Cry" music video. The video's story is about a couple working through life's obstacles side-by-side and holding each other when they cry.

A source confirmed to E! News that the High Note actress and Coldplay frontman nestled into a modern Cape Cod-styled home in Malibu, Calif. for a price tag of $12.5 million.

During summer break, the couple jetted off to Palma De Mallorca, Spain, where they enjoyed a boat ride and some sightseeing in the city.

Before beginning to play Coldplay's latest single, "My Universe," which is a collaboration with the group BTS, Chris pointed to Dakota in the balcony and delivered a special message. "This is about my universe, and she's here," he told the crowd
