Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

The DC Extended Universe — initiated by Zack Snyder, beginning with Man of Steel — ended not with a bang but a whimper with this weak (watery?) sequel that sees the King of Atlantis (Jason Momoa) teaming up with his estranged brother Orm (Patrick Wilson) to stop a global meltdown. Goofy fun, though. But we like The Flash more.

Shogun

The 10-part limited series, an adaptation of James Clavell’s 1975 novel, is set in 1600 when Japan is on the cusp of a civil war. Star and producer Hiroyuki Sanada plays a  feudal lord caught in a power struggle with forces from within (rival clans on the Council of Regents) and without  (European colonists). Unlike the 1980 version starring Richard Chamberlain (go google it), this re-telling puts the Japanese characters front and centre instead of relegating to the background. The cast also includes Tadanobu Asano, Anna Sawai and Cosmo Jarvis.

More power struggles, this time in the board room. Lee Jun-Young stars as the illegitimate son of a chaebol boss who gangs up with his childhood pal (Lee Jae-Wook) to take over the family business. But an equally ambitious woman with a troubled past  (Hong Su-Zu) threatens to throw a spanner in the works. So is she an ally or obstacle?

Ridley Scott’s subversive biopic of French military ruler Napoléon Bonaparte (Joaquin Phoenix) finally arrives on streaming! Be warned: This isn’t the four- hour director’s cut Scott mentioned during the press tour — it’s still the two-and-a-half-hour theatrical version. Maybe Apple will drop the longer edition in November when Gladiator 2 opens in cinemas.
