KUALA LUMPUR: Sunway Healthcare Group (SHG) has broken ground on its first hospital in southern Malaysia, an RM800mil facility targeted for completion in 2030.

Sunway Medical Centre Iskandar Puteri will have more than 400 beds and is expected to employ over 1,400 healthcare professionals. The multi-specialty tertiary hospital will be located within Sunway Group’s 2,000-acre Sunway City Iskandar Puteri township.

It will also house an integrated Cancer and Nuclear Medicine Centre offering radiotherapy and nuclear medicine services.

SHG said the hospital’s proximity to the Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone and the upcoming Johor Bahru–Singapore Rapid Transit System Link would position it to serve Johor’s growing population and support medical tourism.

Sunway Group founder and chairman Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah said quality healthcare was essential to sustaining Johor’s growth.

“We look forward to building a trusted medical institution that serves Johor and the wider region for generations to come,” he said.

SHG president Datuk Lau Beng Long said the hospital would serve communities across southern Malaysia as well as international patients from Indonesia and Singapore.

“As the healthcare anchor of this integrated ecosystem, the hospital will enable us to bring our clinical expertise, integrated model of care and commitment to service excellence to communities across southern Malaysia as well as international patients from Indonesia and Singapore,” he said.

Meanwhile, Johor investment, trade, consumer affairs and human resources committee chairman Lee Ting Han said the project would expand access to specialist care, create skilled jobs and contribute to the state’s economy.

Beyond the hospital, SHG plans to open Sunway Fertility Centre at Sunway Citrine in 2027 and Sunway Ambulatory Care Centre near the RTS Link in 2028. It is also exploring potential elder-care facilities.

The Iskandar Puteri hospital is one of three new hospitals planned by the group, alongside facilities in Seremban Sentral and Putrajaya.

SHG aims to operate eight hospitals with a combined capacity of more than 3,400 beds across Malaysia by 2032, following the listing of Sunway Healthcare Holdings Bhd on Bursa Malaysia’s Main Market in March 2026.

The group targets its future new hospitals to record their first month of positive earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation within 12 to 18 months of opening.
