In a tragic incident in southern Thailand, a 35-year-old man named Surapong Thongnak lost his life after throwing a hand grenade at his ex-girlfriend’s house on May 25. The attack occurred after she refused to reconcile with him, leading to a violent confrontation that left four others injured.

The event unfolded around 8 AM in the Tha Chana district of Surat Thani province, following a domestic dispute. According to reports from Thai media, Surapong had initially gone to his ex-girlfriend’s residence in an attempt to win her back. When his efforts failed, he allegedly attempted to stab her with a pair of scissors. Fortunately, nearby residents intervened and prevented the attack.

In a fit of rage, Surapong returned to his parked car, retrieved an M26 fragmentation grenade, and pulled the pin. However, the grenade did not detonate immediately. As he attempted to throw it at the group gathered outside, it exploded in his hand, resulting in his death. The woman he targeted was unharmed, having retreated into the house just before the explosion.

The blast injured four individuals—two men and two women—who were taken to Tha Chana Hospital for treatment. Among the injured were three relatives of the woman, aged between 40 and 73. The explosion also caused damage, shattering the windows of a nearby parked car.

In a further investigation, police discovered approximately 500 grams of methamphetamine in a bottle inside Surapong’s damaged vehicle. This was not the first run-in with the law for Surapong; he had previously served five months in prison for a drug-related offense in 2020.

This incident highlights the severe consequences of domestic disputes and the potential for violence when emotions run high. It serves as a grim reminder of the importance of addressing relationship issues in a safe and constructive manner.
