Did you know that the United States of America once developed a plan for a full-scale invasion of the island of Taiwan?
Operation Causeway, as it was known, was originally meant to be one of the key components of the US’ WWII Pacific campaign and if undertaken, would have been the biggest air-sea-land operation in military history - bigger even than the D-Day landings in Europe.
The plan was to take control of Formosa, as Taiwan was commonly known back then, from Japan and use it as a base to attack the Japanese home islands.
Causeway took months of hard work and intense planning to formulate before being scrapped in late 1944 in favour of other more achievable objectives.
This video presents the story of Operation Causeway.
