Telekom Malaysia (TM) is rerouting Internet traffic in Penang to reduce the impact to its Streamyx and voice services due to a fire that damaged a node early this morning.In a statement, it said it also wanted to minimise congestion for mobile operators dependent on its network.“At the same time, we are working tirelessly to restore the affected services as soon as possible,” it said, adding that its high-speed broadband service Unifi is back up and running.TM stated there were no injuries or loss of life, and it’s assessing the total damage caused by the fire.“We await the official results of the investigation and will apply necessary steps to avoid this incident from recurring,” it saidThe node at Seberang Jaya caught fire at 12.07am today (July 1), disrupting its telephony, Unifi and Streamyx services in Seberang Jaya, Bukit Tengah, Komtar, Butterworth, Kepala Batas, Machang Bubok, Nibong Tebal, Sungai Bakap, Simpang Empat, Tasek Gelugor, Bukit Mertajam, Jalan Burma and Bayan Baru.A spokesman for the Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) said it received an emergency call at 1.04am.Two fire engines were deployed from the Seberang Jaya fire station, successfully controlling and extinguishing the fire by 4.03am.Earlier, Celcom tweeted that its customers in Penang Island and Seberang Jaya will be facing disruptions to voice and data services due to a fire at a partner’s network site.Tune Talk which rides on Celcom's network also tweeted out that its users will be affected due to the incident.
