IPOH: The Taiping Zoo and Night Safari has achieved another significant milestone in wildlife conservation with the successful births of several animal species between January and June this year.

Taiping Municipal Council president Khairul Amir Mohamad Zubir said among the new arrivals are a chimpanzee, and a white-handed gibbon.

“Besides that three Bawean deer, two milky storks, a nyala, an axis deer, two sambar deer, 14 corn snakes, and a striped skunk were also born,” he said in his speech at the monthly full-board meeting on Thursday (Aug 5).

He said the successful births are not only a testament to the effectiveness of its captive breeding programmes but also reinforce the zoo’s role in supporting global efforts to conserve endangered species.

“These births mark an important achievement in our ongoing conservation work and highlight the vital contribution of the zoo to wildlife preservation efforts,” he added.

Khairul Amir said this was the oldest public zoo in the country, and among those managed by a local council, and has been recognised for its active role in breeding and preserving various species, especially those under threat in the wild.
