How far would celebrities go to wow on red carpets?

At the Golden Melody Awards on Saturday (Jun 28), musicians and singers across Asia showed up in all sorts of over-the-top outfits.

Taiwanese singer Waa Wei was one of them.

The 42-year-old would go on to be named Best Female Mandarin Singer that night for her 2024 album Ordeal By Pearls. It's Waa Wei's second time winning the award - her first was in 2020.

Her night didn't start off well though. She strutted down the red carpet in a pair of white shorts, that many netizens likened to "ah ma (granny) diapers".

Other netizens also another demanded the singer's stylist to apologise for the fashion disaster.

Waa Wei, however, seemed coolly unbothered by the nasty comments about her out from Shushu/Tong, a Shanghai-based fashion label.

"That's a brand that I like a lot and it's very comfortable. I did look at what netizens said but I don't care. They don't understand the look!" she said.

She also added that her outfit was actually inspired by Donald Duck, and not diapers. Um, okay?

Waa Wei's outfit wasn't the only one that had the internet scratching their collective heads that night.
