PETALING JAYA: Mixed doubles shuttlers Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei made a winning return in the Singapore Open after a brief separation.
Tang Jie-Ee Wei showed their class when they beat Americans Presley Smith-Jennie Gai 21-18, 21-15 in just 31 minutes in the first round at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Tuesday (May 27).
It was a good win for the world No. 4 pair in their first individual tournament together since the All-England in March.
Tang Jie-Ee Wei had been separated because of a strained relationship, but resolved their differences quickly and reunited to compete together in the Sudirman Cup last month.
They then played in the Taiwan Open and Malaysian Masters earlier this month alongside different partners – Tang Jie with Chan Wen Tse, and Ee Wei with Loo Bing Kun – whom they had been paired with after the split, before teaming up again for the Singapore Open.
Tang Jie-Ee Wei will face Taiwan's Ye Hong-wei-Nicole Chan next for a place in the last eight.
Meanwhile, independent pair Wong Tien Ci-Lim Chiew Sien suffered a heartbreaking exit after going down fighting 21-19, 19-21, 20-22 to Thailand's Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supissara Paewsampran in 61 minutes.
