It's never easy for a child to see their parents' marriage crumble. But for local singer Taufik Batisah, he was the one who told his folks that they should get a divorce.

Recently, the 43-year-old  Singapore Idol was invited by Rui En to talk about mental health on her Instagram. Rui En and Taufik famously collaborated on 2005 National Day song 'Reach Out For The Skies'. 

When Rui En asked Taufik to talk about a time in his life when he had a "rock bottom moment", the latter admitted that he "totally blocked out" those unpleasant events. He later revealed that it happened when he was about 10 or 11.

"My parents got a divorce. They used to fight, whatever. As someone who's young, you have no idea why they fought. You didn't know how to process it," he said. "You just think: 'Why are they always fighting. It's so noisy'."

Things got so toxic at home that Taufik felt the need to step in and put a stop to it.

"So as a child, I went up to my dad [and] I told him to get a divorce," he recalled.

While the split might have stopped the incessant fighting between his parents, it didn't necessarily make things better for Taufik.

"It was from that moment, and after they got a divorce, Hari Raya was the worst day of the year," he said. 

The star formed a wall around himself after the divorce, something he described as "defense mechanism" to cope with the situation. 

"It's why when I was asked [about my rock bottom moment], I got emotional. I was thinking about that young boy who had to build this wall around him to feel okay," he added.
